Independent publishers also put out free copies. This day also includes events such as costume contests, signings, and raffles. It is a day for comic book fans new and old.

Free Comic Book Day was proposed in 2001 by the retailer of Flying Colors Comics Joe Field. It is observed annually on the first Saturday in May.
