Singles Day is an annual observance that celebrates the status of being single by embracing one's individuality, self-love, and independence. Originally a Chinese event, Singles Day has gained worldwide popularity in recent years, evolving into one of the largest online shopping events. The day serves as an opportunity for single people to either come together through social events, or simply treat themselves to special deals and discounts offered by various retailers, both online and in-store.

The origins of Singles Day can be traced back to China in the 1990s, when it was created by a group of university students as an alternative Valentine's Day for those without a relationship. As it gained momentum, the observance caught the attention of international marketplaces, including South Africa. Consequently, the local retail landscape has embraced the phenomenon by offering attractive discounts and sales on this particular day, extending its consumer base and bolstering South African participation.

In South Africa, Singles Day is observed in much the same way as in other countries. Individuals capitalize on the heavily discounted items, the vast range of which caters to a diverse set of preferences, whether it be new gadgets or clothes. Apart from the retail aspect, social events and gatherings may also be organized to commemorate the day. Like the rest of the world, South Africans observe Singles Day on the 11th of November, otherwise denoted as "11.11," owing to the four single digits that represent both the date and the freedom of singlehood.
