The origins of this special day trace back to the Tariff Act that was signed into law on August 17, 1894. This act recognized and established federal tax exemption for nonprofit organizations, laying the groundwork for the expansive network that thrives today. The widespread celebration, as we know it currently, was actually started in 2017 by Sherita J. Herring, a recognized business consultant and renowned speaker. Nonprofits are shown a great deal of trust from the public, as they are required to be transparent about their finances and operations. Many organizations publish annual reports and financials to show how funds are being used.
National Nonprofit Day occurs each year on August 17th. This day serves as a reminder for individuals to support nonprofits either by volunteering their time, donating funds, or spreading awareness about their essential roles. It also gives nonprofit organizations an opportunity to showcase their contributions and successes, inspiring others to join their cause.
National Nonprofit Day facts
About 60% of American households donates regularly, making those who earn less than $50, 000 a year top contributors when compared to their earnings.
According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS), there were about 1.54 million nonprofits in the US registered with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in 2019.
According to the NCCS , an estimated 25% of US adults volunteered in 2017.
This day is meant to recognize the positive impact that nonprofit organizations have on local communities and around the world. They contribute 5.4% to the U.S gross domestic product (GDP) and 1 in 10 U.S. jobs are in the nonprofit sector.
Even though they are named "nonprofits", these organizations can earn profits. However, any surplus earned must be reinvested back into the organization's mission and cause instead of being distributed to individuals or entities.
Large nonprofit organizations can rival major for-profit corporations, and some of them expand internationally. For example, the American healthcare sector is dominated by nonprofit organizations.
