In New Zealand, our ageing population holds vast knowledge and wisdom. As of June 2020, 16% of New Zealand's population is aged 65 years and over, with this percentage projected to reach 27% by 2043. Therefore, it is crucial to address the unique challenges the elderly face in terms of health care, caregiving, and financial security, to promote healthy ageing and maintain social cohesion.
To celebrate International Day of Older Persons in New Zealand, various community events, discussions, and workshops are organized to shed light on the achievements, rights, and challenges faced by our elderly population. This day serves as an opportunity to raise awareness of and appreciate older people's knowledge, experiences, and sacrifices. Age Concern New Zealand, a charitable organization that supports the rights, dignity, and well-being of older Kiwis, actively supports and organizes various events and initiatives on this day every year, which falls on October 1st.
