Clean Up Australia Day History

Clean Up Australia Day serves to raise awareness for environmental pollution while promoting Australians and the world to clean up their local areas. Clean Up Australia is Australia's largest community-based environmental event. The event began in 1987, when a sailor noticed the large amounts of pollution and junk in the seas. The holiday was originally only in Sydney but has since expanded nationally and internationally.

Clean Up Australia Day is celebrated annually on March 6 in Australia but it is recommended to continue the clean up efforts year round.
