International Migrants Day

International Migrants Day is observed globally, aiming to recognise the contributions, efforts and essential roles of immigrants throughout the world. This Observance encourages public understanding and respect, while raising awareness about the fundamental rights of migrants. International Migrants Day is a call for unity, to address the challenges and hardships faced by migrants, including exploitation and discrimination, and to celebrate the diversity and enrichment migrants bring to host societies globally.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the day in December 2000, which was adopted by all UN members, including the United Kingdom. The UK recognises the important contribution made by migrants who, coming from a wide array of cultures, have enriched society by boosting the economy and enhancing diversity. As a nation that has had a considerable history of immigration, International Migrants Day is of particular relevance to the UK, providing an opportunity to reflect on the positive contributions that migrants have brought to British society and to address systemic issues that affect immigrants’ rights.
