St George's Day History

St. George’s Day seeks to commemorate Saint George. Saint George was a soldier of King Diocletian’s army in the 4th century. He opposed the King’s order to renounce his Christian faith. Saint George refused land, money, and all of Diocletian’s advances. He was executed for refusing to turn on God. Before his execution, he gave his possessions to the poor. Pope Gelasius said that the patron saint was one, whose names [is] justly reverenced among men, but whose actions are known only to God.

St. George’s Day has been celebrated since the 15th century. It is celebrated annually on 23 April.
